Spacecraft Studio / The Smith Family
SmArts Programs 2022 to present
The project celebrates the lead role young people play in driving fashion change. Today young people are increasingly using op shops to construct shifting hybrid identities that champion progressive values and challenge fashion industry stereotypes & corporate ethics. In collaboration with The Smith Family, Spacecraft have been running a project with selected Victorian schools that gives economically and socially disadvantaged students access to design technologies & technical expertise. Over four days the students transform a collection of op shop sourced garments into personal design statements. The transformations are achieved through practical hands-on printing workshops, sewing and critique. On the last day the students work with a fashion photographer, stylists & models to apply attitude and record their new designs. The project performs a number of social and support functions for disadvantaged students and receives encouraging feedback from participating students, parents and teachers.
